Boosting energy for active lifestyles
Have your breakfast
It’s often described as the most important meal of the day and for good reason. People who regularly have their breakfast every morning report less stress and overall better mood compared to those who skip it[1]. On top of that, eating high-fiber foods such as hot oatmeal give you longer-lasting energy than pastries and keep you feeling full as the day goes by[2].
Hydrate yourself on the regular
Dehydration can cause you to feel drained and fatigued[3]. Even if you are unable to hit the recommended amount of eight glasses of water a day, drinking enough water to keep your body well hydrated throughout the day is important. You’ll know if you are well hydrated if your urine is light-coloured[4]. Even walking to get a glass of water helps to wake you up.
Go for a short exercise
Exercise is a natural energy booster and it helps to get oxygen-rich blood surging through your body to your heart, muscles and brain[5]. Exercising regularly – even if it’s only 10 minutes each time – will help keep your energy levels high[2]. So get moving every chance you get, and find that little bit of time to fit in some exercise into your day.
Get more sleep
It’s easy to neglect sleep whenever we are busy. Rushing deadlines, watching videos and spending our nights outside result in us pushing our bedtimes back regularly. However, getting sufficient sleep is vital for optimal health all-around. Virtually all our bodily systems are influenced by our sleep quality and rest hours[6]. Any sleep disturbances could result in us feeling lethargic, grumpy and tired the next day. As a rule of thumb, you should aim to get around 7-8 hours of sleep each night for adults (including older adults), to help improve your mood and boost your energy levels[7].
